Ma'aser Behemah (Tithing Animals)
Tithing livestock - every tenth animal is holy to the Lord.
'All the tithe of the herd or the flock, whatever passes under the staff, the tenth shall be holy to the Lord' (Vayikra 27:32)
Ma'aser behemah is the commandment to tithe animals: every tenth animal that is born is sanctified as a tithe. The counting is done as the animals pass under the staff, one by one, and every tenth one is marked as holy. The sanctified animal is brought as a sacrifice and eaten by its owners in Jerusalem. This mitzvah applies to kosher livestock - cattle, sheep, and goats. Like the tithes of the land, the tithing of animals teaches that the blessing of increase is not merely ours - a tenth of every increase is dedicated to holiness.
