Bi'ur (Removal of Tithes)
Removing and destroying all leftover tithes before the new year.
'When you have made an end of tithing all the tithe of your increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and have given it to the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow, that they may eat within your gates and be satisfied' (Devarim 26:12)
Bi'ur is the commandment to remove and destroy all leftover tithes and sacred portions before the appointed times. In the fourth and seventh years of the cycle, the farmer must remove all tithes from his house and give them to their proper recipients, or declare that they have been properly disposed of. The declaration of bi'ur is recited before God: 'I have removed the holy things from the house, and I have given them to the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow...' (Devarim 26:13). This declaration is made on the last day of the festival of Passover in the fourth and seventh years. Through bi'ur, the farmer accounts for all the tithes and gifts he was obligated to separate during the cycle. Nothing of holiness remains in his house - all has been given to its proper destination.
